With higher level of nuclear safety and technological robustness, SMR (small modular reactor) is getting more and more attention of European countries, and a lot SMR technology companies are actively in Europe.
Since IAEA’s Site and External Events Design (SEED) process has been finished, Romania’s first site selection was finished and the project will go next steps. And on May 2024, CEO of Nuclearelectrica visited Doosan Enerbility in South Korea, which set to manufacture and supply the core equipment, specifically the upper reactor module, to NuScale Power.
In order to make the first deployment of SMR in Europe, what are current international collaborative efforts for SMR innovation? How will the government, regulatory agencies, and industry associations support the localization of SMR supply chains?
| Recently, Virgil Daniel Popescu, Member of the European Parliament and a member of the EPP has confirmed to join the Europe Nuclear Energy & SMR Conference 2024 (ENES 2024), Nov. 13-14th | Prague, Czech Republic (ENES2024) as panel Speaker to join the panel discussion about “Balancing Focus on Power Generation and Localization: European Companies’ Actively Engage in SMRs International Supply Chain and Collaborate on R&D Initiatives”. |
Dr. Virgil Popescu was elected as a member of the European Parliament in June 2024. Prior to this, he was appointed Romanian Minister of Energy in December 2020, a mandate he completed in June 2023. He also served as the Minister of Economy, Energy, and the Business Environment from 2019 to 2020. Also, he served as interim at Romanian Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitalization, in 2022. Additionally, he held the position of Vice President of the Commission of Industry and Services in the Romanian Parliament's Chamber of Deputies from 2016 to 2019, and was the President of the Environment Commission from June 2023 to June 2024. Dr. Popescu has been a parliamentary representative in the Romanian Parliament from 2016 to 2024. Beyond his political career, Dr. Popescu is actively involved in academic and research activities, serving as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Craiova University. He holds a Ph.D. in management from Craiova University and a BS in engineering/automation and computing from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania. |

Amidst European phased target of achieving zero emissions by 2035 and energy independence, nuclear power industry is playing a vital role in achieving a sustainable and resilient energy future for the continent. Despite facing challenges, opportunities for new nuclear power plant construction are arising in recent years, notably with advanced designs like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Many aging nuclear plants present chances for life extension and upgrades. Advancements in fuel cycle & waste management also offer potential for reducing the volume and radiotoxicity of nuclear waste. The conference will provide thorough updates on the civil nuclear industry in Czech Republic, Poland, France, Slovakia, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Slovenia, Finland.
After experiencing delays and cost escalations in some NPP constructions & upgrades, how would the industry solve key challenges such as lengthy regulatory approval processes, public opposition, financing constraints, human resources and skills shortages? What kind of strategies and approaches are needed for deploying SMRs soon in Europe? How to balance the pros and cons of spent fuel recycling and direct disposal for the sustainable and economical perspective? With over 240 senior attendees from the Government & Regulators, Utilities & Operators, Large Reactor & SMRs, Fuel Cycle & Waste Management, Institute & Universities, Associations, EPC & Engineering Consulting, Professional Services, Leading Technology Firms, and Other Key Stakeholders, the 2-day Europe Nuclear Energy & SMR Conference 2024 seeks to accelerate nuclear power projects and unlock the full potential of nuclear energy to contribute to European energy transition goals, while ensuring safety, sustainability, and affordability.
