Hello ,

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) technology is deploying globally, particularly in Europe. In June 2023, Rolls-Royce SMR was chosen as the preferred bidder by Great British EnergyNuclear to develop small modular reactors, pending government approval. RoPower is advancing the second phase of FEED for NuScale technology. Bulgaria plans to deploy SMRs and attract data centers. CEZ will discuss local deployment with Rolls-Royce SMR, while Belgiums SCK-CEN and Italys ENEA have formed an alliance to develop lead-cooled SMRs.

European SMR companies need significant investment support to advance. On July 3, 2025, Copenhagen Atomics received €2.5 million from the European Innovation Council for thorium molten salt reactors. With two prototypes tested, they are preparing for the first critical test of an advanced reactor in Europe with the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.
