On Nov. 2024, Candu Energy Inc., a subsidiary of AtkinsRéalis, secured a contract with EnergoNuclear S.A. to build two new CANDU® reactors at Romania's Cernavoda Nuclear Generating Station. Supported by $3 billion in Canadian export financing, this project aims to nearly double Romania's clean electricity production. The design will be evaluated by Romania’s nuclear regulator, National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN).

Meanwhile, on May, 2025, Belgium's Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN) has begun a two-and-a-half-year consultation on a lead-cooled small modular reactor as part of the EU-SMR-LFR project, collaborating with Italy (Ansaldo Nucleare) and Romania (CNCAN, RATEN) to address permit application challenges.
