Following a lengthy and complicated process, Romania’s Cernavodă 3 & 4 new project has settled on Canada’s AtkinsRéalis (Candu reactor), sticking with the proven Candu design—now, the focus shifts to securing services and equipment.
At the same time, Romania is poised to lead Europe’s SMR deployment, with two projects in the EU SMR Alliance and potential first-mover advantage through the NuScale-RoPower partnership which has started second phase of the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study, and received financial support from US Exim Bank, potentially launching Europe’s first small modular reactor.
With the Czech Republic's Dukovany 5 project still facing disputes from EDF, what are Romania’s next steps for Cernavodă 3 & 4, and what preparatory work has been done for its first SMR project?
